“Here, put on these sunglasses. We need to be incognito.”

 “Why?”

“Have you seen your hair today?”

Mavis slipped the glasses on and unconsciously patted her head.

Verna followed suit, sliding the red and blue framed specs up her long nose.

 “How’s that?”

 “Better.”

“If we hurry, we can still catch the afternoon bus and get the mid-day discount.”

They shuffled along together, oversized bags banging against their broad hips. Mavis stumbled on a crack in the sidewalk and dropped a handful of coupons.

“Oh, no! Wait, we can’t leave future cash on the ground!”

“Forget about it. They’re probably expired like the hair salon one was.”

“That wasn’t my fault. The two looked like a five. They shouldn’t write the expiration dates so small.”

“You really should get your eyes checked.”

“It isn’t December yet. That’s when they run the specials.”

Verna shook her head. When would she ever learn?

“Sometimes a special ain’t so special, Mavis.”

“Well, not everyone gives senior discounts, Verna. We were lucky that girl at the salon could fit us in. And she even gave us these visors for free!  That’s a $5 value right there!”

At the bus stop, the two seniors flopped down on the bench.

“Well, of course she gave us free visors. I’ll bet that’s the first time she’s done perms since she left beauty school.  I have to be honest with you, Mavis.  We look like a pair of poodles.”

The city bus pulled up just then and the two women boarded.

“Well, at least it was a good deal!”
